Lawn Design Ideas & Tips

The lawn design ideas can be good solutions for nice garden decorations, the lawn is elegant and easy to grow, that is why gardeners like its forms and rich color. It is perfect for green gardens and it tolerates most soil types. Use these tips and design ideas to make a statement with your lawn so it will be a key element of your landscape's overall design.

Here’s a few things you’ll need to plan for before you seed or turf you new lawn:

  1. A long narrow lawn will draw the eye along the length of the area. A feature such as a large tree, garden bed or statue located at the far end of this type of lawn will enhance the visual effect.
  2. You may need to pave a pathway or use stepping stones in heavy traffic areas. People walking or stepping onto the lawn in the same place each time can damage the grass and compact the soil.
  3. Remember you’ll have to mow your lawn! The lawn surface should not be too steep for the mower to negotiate. On sloping blocks, terracing may be required.
  4. If the ground is too uneven, the mower will sheer the grass. Try not to create any ‘hard-to-get-at’ corners or narrow strips in your design. On the same note, make sure your lawn isn’t too small. Even small lawns need mowing, and there is nothing worse then having to pull out a cumbersome mower each week to mow only 5m2.
  5. Totally flat lawns don’t drain well and grass growth will be poor – particularly in heavier soils. If soil isn’t sandy, sub-surface drainage may be necessary for a quality lawn.
  6. All parts of the lawn must receive direct sunlight at some part of the day in order for the grass to grow well. Those areas under shady trees where the grass won’t grow consider incorporating a larger garden bed, an outdoor seating are, small paved area or perhaps a decorative pebble feature area.
  7. Avoid having grass planted right up under the eaves of the house. This will restrict rain from reaching it and, with less water, it won’t grow as well as the rest of the lawn. Once again, the eaves can also shade the grass for prolonged periods, especially through the shorter winter days, which will also cause poor growth.

Enhance your garden with these design ideas and techniques.

1. Create a center

Lawn Design Ideas & Tips
Your backyard lawn doesn't need to be a big dull space. Use it as a central access point to other landscape features. Here, a meandering swath of grass looks great on its own, but it also connects pathways that lead to a series of rooms. The result is charm - and an efficient use of yard space.

2. Create a frame

Lawn Design Ideas & Tips
Just as a great frame can enhance the picture inside, the right edging can accentuate your lawn for a stunning display. Take a cue from this dazzler -- a boxwood hedge planted in a zigzag fashion acts as a dramatic accent for a lush green lawn. Red coleus planted in the pockets of the hedge heightens the drama.

3. Give it some shape

Lawn Design Ideas & Tips
Do the unexpected by playing with different shapes around your lawn. Your eye will be pleasantly surprised by the change in pace. Here, a rectangular lawn contrasts with concrete spheres. Square stone pavers on the gravel leading up the lawn throw another shape into the mix, making the yard a hip piece of contemporary art. Here's a hint: The concrete spheres are simple to roll away when you mow and put back in place afterward to reduce the amount of trimming.

4. Chess paved lawn design idea

Lawn Design Ideas & Tips
Outdoor Chess does not have to stay on the patio, it can easily spill into the lawn and by grouting the tiles with grass the chessboard is no longer a separate entity. Another way of incorporating an outdoor chess game into the lawn is by using the lawn as the alternating squares. With the pavers inset into the lawn, they’re not even in the way of the lawnmower.

5. Go graphic

Lawn Design Ideas & Tips
Don't be afraid to make your lawn an unexpected artistic element in your landscape: Play with shapes, use contrasts and complements, and add eye-catching textural elements. This square, edged by restrained plantings, replicates the shapes of the surrounding brick patio and pavers set in gravel. It also provides a transition between those areas and the flowerbeds, giving the landscape a tidy, yet accessible feel.

6. Enhance Design Elements

Lawn Design Ideas & Tips
Make your lawn work extra hard to complement hardscape features, as this yard illustrates. The grass, crisscrossed by intersecting mini pavers, replicates the details found in the outdoor covered patio, enhancing their placement and design. Attention to detail, such as how the size and shape of the pavers accent the rim on the roof, makes all the difference.

7. Let it lead somewhere

Lawn Design Ideas & Tips
Take time out of your day and relax with a nice stroll through your yard. Grass paths aren't just for getting somewhere; a graceful path can make your landscape more accessible and comfortable. Here's a hint: If your grass path has a twist or shape to fit around or through existing flowerbeds, you'll add mystery and encourage exploration.
